IPL vs LED light therapy: what is the difference?

IPL SKIN REJUVENATION

IPL and LED light therapy both use light to treat the skin, but they work in different ways. If you are comparing skin treatments on the Gold Coast, understanding their purposes can help you know what to discuss during a consultation.

IPL uses intense pulses of light to target selected pigment and blood vessels. LED uses specific wavelengths of lower-intensity light to influence cellular activity. Their treatment experience, recovery and potential benefits differ.

At That Face Place in Palm Beach, we offer both treatments. The starting point is assessing your skin and identifying what is contributing to your concerns.

What is IPL skin rejuvenation?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It delivers a range of wavelengths through a handpiece, with filters and settings selected for the treatment purpose.

Light is absorbed by targets within the skin, such as melanin in pigmentation or haemoglobin in blood vessels. This energy converts to heat, allowing selected concerns to be treated.

IPL may be considered for certain sunspots, freckles, visible facial vessels and redness. Suitability depends on the diagnosis, skin tone, recent sun exposure and other individual factors.

What is LED light therapy?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. These devices deliver selected wavelengths of light, with the treatment purpose depending on the wavelength, dose and device used.

Red-light therapy has been studied for concerns including fine lines, skin texture and supporting recovery after some procedures. Outcomes vary, and research is continuing into the most effective treatment schedules.

LED does not use the same targeted heating process as IPL. Its role in a treatment plan is therefore different, even when both treatments are being considered for overall skin quality.

Both treatments require appropriate assessment and eye protection.

Which treatment is better for pigmentation?

For selected pigmentation concerns, IPL may be considered because it can target melanin. However, brown patches do not all have the same cause, and a treatment suitable for sunspots may be inappropriate for another condition.

At That Face Place, pigmentation assessment forms part of treatment planning. Your practitioner will discuss whether IPL, another treatment or a different management approach suits your skin.

LED may have a supporting role in some skin programmes, but it should not be assumed to provide the same pigment-targeting effect as IPL.

What about redness or sensitive skin?

Redness can have several causes. Visible vessels, inflammation and skin irritation may look similar but require different approaches.

IPL may be considered for selected vascular concerns. LED may be considered for other treatment goals, depending on the device and assessment. Choosing between them involves identifying the cause of the redness and reviewing your skin’s current condition.

A gentler treatment experience does not automatically mean a treatment is suitable. Tell your practitioner about light sensitivity, medications, previous reactions and any diagnosed skin conditions.

Can IPL and LED be included in the same treatment plan?

They may be included in a personalised programme when there is a reason for using each treatment. At That Face Place, LED is available as a standalone appointment or an addition to selected treatments.

Your practitioner will explain whether combining treatments is appropriate, how appointments should be scheduled and what improvement is realistic. You can read more about LED light therapy after skin treatments.
