How do I Choose a Cosmetic Injector?

Cosmetic surgery facts 1024x683 1

Injectable treatments such as fillers and Botox are gaining a lot of popularity day by day. They are non-invasive, quick, and effective. That is why more and more people wish to get the treatment done. Like other cosmetic treatments, cosmetic injectables also come with certain risks and complications. These risks can be significantly minimized if you choose the right cosmetic injector. An inexperienced cosmetic injector will do more harm than good, and you will regret your decision.

The wrong injector can may a substance that isn’t approved by FDA or might inject the substance incorrectly. Hence, selecting the right injector is of critical importance. In this article, we will share some pointers that will help you choose the right service provider. Without further ado, let’s get started:

On-site Physician

The first thing you need to understand is that different states have different regulations regarding who is allowed to inject a filler and neurotoxin for cosmetic purposes. The practitioner must adhere to very rigorous standards for your safety.  Regardless of who is performing the injector, a board-certified physician must be present on the site. This is critical in case any complication arises during the injection administration. This on-site physician could be a board-certified plastic surgeon, facial plastic surgeon, ophthalmic plastic surgeon or dermatologist.

Injector Qualifications

Your injector needs to be a board-certified physician, a physician’s assistant, or a registered nurse working closely with a supervising physician. It is crucial that the provider is highly experienced with injections and follows all the protocols. The practitioner must explain the procedure clearly to you, should be able to answer all your questions and inform you about the risks and benefits of the procedure. Your service provider needs to be well-informed about the latest techniques and must administer injections regularly.

Complete Disclosure of Risks and Benefits

To avoid complications post an injection, it is important to be fully aware of the process. Please disclose all your medical history to the injector before getting the treatment done. Your provider should inform you about the risks and concerns and the steps necessary to avoid them. Please make sure that you know the brand name of the injectable and ensure FDA approves it. Your instructor must guide you regarding how to limit your risks/concerns and what results to expect. Be sure to follow all the instructions as closely as possible.

Facility Accreditation

Avoid getting the injections done at a salon, nail salon, spa, hotel rooms, or a mall. Ensure that injection administration is performed in a medical office or a clinic where a physician is available on-site. Ensure that the facility has proper licensing as per your state’s regulations. The environment needs to be clean and professional.

Professional Memberships

You have to ensure that your injector is from a national or local society. The professional associations signify that your service provider has significant experience and is constantly up to date with the latest techniques, and is connected with other like-minded professionals.  Look out for memberships such as ASAPS, AAFPRS, ASOPRS, ASPS, ASDS, SPSSCS, ASPSN, or AAPSA.

Reliable References

Generally, if you can get a referral from a friend or family member who has had a positive experience, you will have a piece of mind. A reliable reference works wonders. If that is not the case, ask the injector to show you reviews from other patients. You can also dig in deeper and do the research online. There are plenty of forums, websites, and social media pages that share authentic reviews for patients. You can also ask your GP to recommend you a practitioner.

Each injectable has a different protocol but generally follows a similar format. Make sure that your surgeon follows it in terms of the consent, taking your medical history, HIPPA, and giving you detailed pre and post-care instructions. The injector needs to tell you what to expect and prepare for the procedure (instructions such as coming in with a clean face, applying a particular medication beforehand, etc.). Ensure that the injector cleans the treatment site properly and prepares it before injecting it. Essentially, a service provider needs to be quite thorough. It is one of the most important checkmarks while selecting the right one.

Like any other doctor/medical professional, it is crucial to communicate clearly with the injector. If you can talk openly and clearly with the injector during the consultation, it is a vast green signal. It ensures that you will be able to communicate your aesthetic goals to the service provider and achieve higher satisfaction. The goal is to have an overall pleasant experience.

Follow-up Care

Although most injectables are considered low risk, it can take you some time to see the full effects of the procedure. Swelling, redness and bruising usually appear immediately after the procedure and might last for days. The right cosmetic injector needs to be available during the post-treatment phase if you have any questions or concerns post the treatment. Ensure that your provider offers follow-up care, so you don’t have to worry about dealing with any queries and concerns post the treatment.

Reasonable Cost

Based on the area you live in, the experience and expertise of the provider, and aesthetic goals, you will receive different quotes from different providers. If you are on a budget, the cost is an essential factor to consider. However, you shouldn’t simply choose someone because they offer cheaper services. Choose the provider based on their experience, expertise, and factor in the cost last.
